Uisangdae Pavilion (낙산사 의상대)

100 Naksansa-ro, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do

Overview

Uisangdae Pavilion is situated on a seaside cliff leading to Hongnyeonam Hermitage from Naksansa Temple. The term "dae" in Uisangdae refers to a structure built to admire the surrounding scenery, with the spectacular views from here considered a must-see attraction of Naksansa Temple. The pavilion was built in 1925 to commemorate the achievements of Great Master Uisang. Great Master Uisang was an eminent monk who founded Naksansa Temple in the 11th year of King Munmu of Silla (671), and legends related to him are passed down throughout the temple grounds. It is said that when Great Master Uisang returned from the Tang Dynasty in China and built Naksansa Temple, he surveyed the terrain and practiced seated meditation at the site where Uisangdae Pavilion stands today. The current Uisangdae was restored into a hexagonal pavilion in 1995.
