Pungnap-dong Earthen Fortification (서울 풍납동 토성)

73-1 Pungnap-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul

Overview

Pungnap-dong Earthen Fortification is a flatland fortress wall built of earth during the Hanseong period of Baekje. Although only about 2.7 kilometers remains today due to the loss of the western wall facing the Hangang River, it is estimated that the original total circumference was 3.7 kilometers, making it larger and more magnificent than Goguryeo's Gungnaeseong Fortress or Silla's Wolseong Fortress. The excavation of upper-class artifacts such as bronze cauldrons and belt buckles in 1925 led to its rediscovery, and it has been protected as a National Historic Site since 1963. Inside, remains of early Baekje roads, large pit dwellings, tiled buildings, buildings presumed to be temples, and artifacts related to rituals have been identified, and since 2000, preservation and restoration have been underway in six zones.
