Midang Literary House (미당 서정주 시문학관)
2-8 Jilmajae-ro, Gochang-gun, Jeonbuk-do
Overview
The Midang Poetry Museum was built to commemorate the poet "Midang" Seo Jeong-ju and was completed by remodeling the closed Seonun Elementary School. It opened in the autumn of 2001, the year following his death. The opening date, November 3, was chosen to commemorate Midang's participation in the Gwangju Student Uprising while he was a student at Jungang High School. The memorial hall in the first exhibition displays the poet's letters, poetry collections, and personal belongings. The second exhibition building exhibits the poet's handwritten manuscripts, research papers on Seo Jeong-ju's poetry, and other personal items.
This Memorial Hall is an even more meaningful space as it is located near the Birth Home and burial site of Midang Seo Jeong-ju, and it aims for an architectural aesthetic of 'eco-friendliness' and 'learning' by giving birth to a closed school building.
